Background

Binn Group Ltd, based in Perthshire, is Scotland’s largest independent provider of recycling and waste management services. Binn offers a comprehensive range of integrated waste services, including the collection, processing, and transforming of waste into reusable resources.

In 2014, Binn Group closed its landfill site and as a result expanded and diversified its Binn Ecopark site to receive, process and recycle a wide range of waste materials.

This has included the development of two separate Material Reclamation Facilities (MRF) treating commercial, industrial, and municipal waste, a 30,000 tonne per annum food waste anaerobic digestion facility, in-vessel and green-waste composting facilities, a residual waste Solid Recovered Fuel (SRF) facility and waste wood processing and storage facilities.

Challenge

Binn Group receives a significant percentage of its waste through its skip hire business, and through collection and site clearance services offered to construction companies.

The waste generated from these sources is processed through their MRF, separating, grading and baling a range of recoverable commodities such as cardboard, plastic and wood, which can then be sent to reprocessors. The remaining aggregate material can then be repurposed back into the construction sector to be used as sub-base for buildings, or into road construction.

For this material to be of high enough quality to be used within these applications, any remaining metal must be removed, leaving an uncontaminated aggregate material.

Solution

Having dealt with CRJ Services for several years, Stuart Smith – Operations Director at Binn Group approached CRJ Services for an equipment solution that could extract both ferrous and non-ferrous metals from their mid-sized aggregate product.

Following consultation from CRJ Services’ Damian Casey, the Steelweld Strobe was selected at the ideal solution.

“Having supplied Binn Group with various machinery over the years, it was a pleasure to be able to provide a solution to their metal extraction requirement. The Strobe is a market leading, energy efficient Eddy Current Separator, with proven results in producing clean, metal free products.”

Damian Casey – Sales Manager at CRJ Services Ltd.

The Steelweld Strobe is a mobile Eddy Current Separator which uses both a rare earth drum magnet and a Master Magnets ECS to liberate ferrous and non-ferrous metals from a wide variety of waste material streams.

The unique low infeed height of the Strobe allows it to be fed directly from other processing equipment such as trommels or desk screeners. It can be run from its onboard 65kW generator, or via a mains connection providing users flexibility in its power source.

Once we had the Strobe set up and optimised for our material, it worked really well and efficiently. Being able to feed it directly from the mid-size belt of our deck screener was ideal.
