Apprentice Heavy Plant Mechanic

Following the success of our previous apprentices in 2021, CRJ Services is now looking to recruit two new Apprentice Heavy Plant Mechanics. 

We are looking for someone to join a successful national business in a growing and resilient industry. You will provide maintenance support across a wide range of equipment including but not limited to screeners, shredders, waste processing equipment & plant equipment within a workshop-based environment. 

Working for CRJ Services, you will become a multi-skilled Heavy Plant Mechanic.

Responsibilities will include:

  • Adhering to CRJ Services Health and Safety standards and policies
  • Conducts methodical periodic preventive maintenance across a variety of systems.
  • Removes and replaces components
  • Gains and maintains the skills and knowledge to enable fast and effective maintenance solutions to CRJ and CRJ customer's equipment
  • Complies with quality assurance policies and procedures to ensure standards are met or exceeded
  • Keeps accurate records of work undertaken
  • Join a Successful National Business in a growing and resilient industry
  • Manufacturer Training provided
  • Training and competency card scheme provided by the employer
  • Mentoring system in place with the employer
  • To provide maintenance support across a wide range of equipment including but not limited to; Screeners, Shredders, Waste processing equipment & Plant equipment within a workshop-based environment. Occasional requirement to provide site-based support as required.

Any previous experience in the mechanical engineers or agricultural industries would be an advantage but not a necessity.

GCSEs at grades C/4 or above (or equivalent) in maths and English.


Future prospects

There are a number of progression routes within our engineering department, including team leader and supervisor roles.  The apprentices can expect to earn £35,000 at the end of the 3-year apprenticeship.


About the Apprenticeship

Level 3 Apprenticeship in Land-Based Service Engineering Technician


Applications for this apprenticeship are being processed by Reaseheath College. If successful at CRJ Services interview, you will be invited to a remote assessment with Reaseheath which will include a maths and English test. 

Level 3 Land-Based Service Engineering Technician apprenticeship standard, which includes:

Level 2 Functional Skills in maths, English, and ICT (if required)

End-Point Assessment (EPA)


Reaseheath Training will be the apprenticeship training provider for this Apprenticeship.  The employer will give guidance and support throughout and a mentor will be assigned to you.


Off-the-job training must make up at least 20% of the apprentice’s contracted hours, over the total duration of the apprentice’s planned training period.  Reaseheath Training also offer optional extra industry qualifications at additional cost.

Reaseheath delivers agricultural engineering training for leading national and international companies and course, including CRJ Services


This apprenticeship is suitable for employed land-based service engineers who are interested in developing their technical and professional skills and knowledge.


You will be trained by specialist staff in our fully equipped workshops to ensure you gain the technical knowledge required for a successful career in modern engineering.




What will I study?


  • Environmental, safe working and legal requirements
  • Use of specialist tools and equipment
  • Thermally and chemically joining metals and components
  • Advanced technical and engineering principles of land-based engineering machinery, plant and equipment
  • Service, maintenance and repair principles and practices for complex machinery, plant and equipment
  • Accessing, interpreting and applying technical data
  • Diagnosing faults and verifying machinery
  • Functional Skills or GCSE in English and Maths depending on previous qualifications


How long will it take?


  • 24-36 months (block release).  27 weeks at college over a 3 year period. 
  • Those with a level 2 apprenticeship already may be able to complete the apprenticeship in a reduced timescale. 
  • Those needing to gain functional maths or English may need to spend additional time at college


What qualifications do I need to start?

  • Preferably 4 GCSEs at grade 4 or above including English and Maths
  • Good understanding of IT systems
  • Entry assessment to be completed



What qualifications will I gain?

  • Level 3 Advanced Apprenticeship in Land-Based Service Engineering Technician
  • Functional Skills or GCSE in English and Maths depending on previous qualifications


Course options after this programme

  • Continue to progress within the industry or study a degree at the university
